Making sure that newcomers have the correct health information and that they understand it is vitally important.
All a newcomer will know is “the way they did it in my country”. Even if a newcomer has strong English skills, navigating the Canadian health care system is unique to Canada and even province to province will have some differences.
Newcomers need to be explicitly guided and taught how the Canadian health care system works and how to navigate it. Otherwise, they simply will not know how to do it.
As Canadians, we can’t assume that newcomers will just know the expectations. This includes things such as how to book appointments, how to get prescriptions from a pharmacy, how to use a lab, and the appropriate use of the Emergency Department at the hospital.
There is a lot for a newcomer to learn and Health Care Professionals can play a key role in assisting them through the health care system.
