"For several years, there had been a revolving door of family doctors in the southern Alberta city. Some coming in, but more leaving. And before anyone seemed to grasp the severity of the situation, which was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, an estimated 40,000 people found themselves without a dedicated physician in a city of just 100,000.But in an unusual move, the municipal government in Lethbridge, which was rarely part of provincial recruiting efforts, formed a partnership with Alberta Health Services. The result: 17 family doctors were hired last year – more than triple the intake of 2021 and far beyond the four total hires in 2020 and 2019."

A great article written by Dr. Mishka Singh. Dr. Singh is a Lethbridge physician who spent time volunteering in a refugee camp. She is an active member of the Lethbridge LIP Newcomer Health Advisory Group, and practices medicine at Campbell Clinic South. "Refugee is a word on everyone's lips at the moment. Some people associate negative connotations with this word, while others see the plight of refugees as a call to action. Few people in the western world, however, see refugees as people that are like themselves, teachers, bus drivers, doctors living in houses coming home for dinner and then one day their life, their sense of normality is turned upside down by war and political unrest..."

Recent labour market research conducted in Southern Alberta has indicated that some employers find it difficult to recruit workers with specific skill sets their business require; this suggests a skill shortage in some sectors. At the same time, immigrants to Canada, many of whom are highly skilled, educated and experienced in their chosen fields aren’t finding professional employment. With a grant from the province of Alberta, the Department of Labor and Immigration, along with a commitment from more than 20 community partners, we are excited to offer a series of 8 learning events. The series is designed to provide education, support and connections to local employers, service providers, and immigrant job seekers in order to fill gaps and strengthen our economy and community. This issue has increased in importance even more as we recover from COVID-19.
