Federal

The Government of Canada is run by the House of Commons, the Senate and the Prime Minister. There are 302 Members of Parliament (MP’s) and 105 Senators. The government meets in Ottawa, Ontario but MP’s and Senators also spend time in their home areas. MP’s are elected by the public while Senators are appointed by the government.

The federal government takes care of things like:

• Immigration
• Employment
• National defence
• Agriculture
• Multiculturalism
• Justice
• Foreign affairs
• National parks
• The environment
• Native affairs
• Fisheries and oceans
• Natural resources

The federal and provincial governments take care of different levels of the same departments, like justice, agriculture, health and education.

The Lethbridge riding (area) is represented by one Member of Parliament. The riding includes many smaller communities near the city, such as Barons, Nobleford, Picture Butte, Coalhurst, Coaldale, Raymond, Cardston, Warner, Magrath and Milk River.
