Emergencies – Dial 911 – You will be asked the address of where you are. You will be asked if you need police, an ambulance or fire department.
In some countries, police are considered corrupt, that is not the case in Canada. Police in Canada keep people safe and enforce the law. Under Canadian law, you’re presumed innocent until proven guilty.
You should call the police if you:
- are the victim of a crime or feel unsafe
- witnessed an accident, incident or crime
- know about criminal activities
If the police question or arrest you:
- ask to have a lawyer and/or an interpreter present (if you need one)
- be prepared to show identification
- there is no reason to be afraid to speak to a police officer
- be polite and cooperative
- look directly at the officer, eye contact indicates honesty
- speak clearly, confidently and answer all questions truthfully
- be 100% honest when providing information even if you may be at fault (you can be charged for giving false information)
- make sure you know why you were stopped or arrested
- offering money, gifts or services in exchange for special treatment is against the law in Canada
